Nigeria's tax authorities are deploying simplified tax return mechanisms under the law to encourage micro-enterprises in the informal sector to formalise their operations. The initiative targets small-scale traders, artisans, and service providers who have historically operated outside the formal tax net due to complex filing requirements.
The simplified return framework is designed to reduce the administrative burden that has long deterred informal businesses from registering and complying with tax obligations. By streamlining what micro-enterprises must report and how they report it, the law aims to widen the tax base without imposing disproportionate compliance costs on the smallest economic actors.
Informal enterprises represent a significant portion of Nigeria's economic activity yet contribute minimally to government revenue. The introduction of accessible tax return formats is part of a broader strategy to integrate these businesses into the formal financial system, potentially unlocking access to credit, government support programmes, and other benefits that accompany formal registration.
