Every taxpayer in Nigeria—whether an individual or a corporate entity—is required to obtain a Tax Identification Number, commonly referred to as a TIN. The TIN is a unique identifier issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) through the Joint Tax Board (JTB) and is essential for filing tax returns, opening a business bank account, bidding for government contracts, and carrying out various other financial and regulatory transactions.
The TIN is generated through the Joint Tax Board's online portal, which serves as the central platform for tax registration across the country. The process is designed to be accessible to all categories of taxpayers.
Once issued, the TIN remains with the taxpayer for life. It is important that taxpayers safeguard their TIN and quote it on all tax-related correspondence and transactions. Failure to obtain or quote a TIN where required can result in penalties or denial of services.
Taxpayers who have not yet obtained their TIN are encouraged to do so promptly, as it is a foundational step towards full tax compliance in Nigeria.
