Every taxable individual and business entity in Nigeria is required to obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN). The TIN is a unique numeric identifier issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) through the Joint Tax Board (JTB) and serves as a prerequisite for various financial and regulatory transactions.
The generation of a TIN can be completed online via the Joint Tax Board TIN registration portal. Applicants are required to provide personal or business details including full name, date of birth, residential address, phone number, and email address. For businesses, additional incorporation documents and details of the company's registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) may be required.
Once the application is successfully processed, the TIN is issued instantly in many cases. The TIN remains valid for the lifetime of the taxpayer and must be quoted on all tax returns, receipts, and correspondence with tax authorities. It is also increasingly required for opening bank accounts, processing government contracts, and completing property transactions across Nigeria.
