Operating without a Tax Identification Number (TIN) constitutes a direct breach of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025. The law does not accept complexity as a defence, and the baseline penalty for noncompliance stands at ₦100,000. The process of obtaining a Tax ID is entirely digital and straightforward; postponing it merely invites administrative sanctions.
**No Workarounds Exist**
The digital infrastructure underpinning the new fiscal regime leaves no room for shortcuts. Individuals must present their National Identification Number (NIN), while businesses require prior registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The system already holds your data; the registration process simply activates your legal standing to operate and earn income.
**Generating a Tax ID as an Individual**
First, secure your NIN. The eleven-digit National Identification Number serves as your primary digital credential. Have it on hand before starting the process.
Second, visit the official Joint Tax Board (JTB) TIN Registration portal. This integrated platform functions as the central repository for all individual taxpayer records in Nigeria.
Third, select the TIN Registration option. The system will request your NIN or Bank Verification Number (BVN), along with your date of birth. Submitting this information triggers an automatic synchronisation with the national identity database, verifying your identity in real time.
Finally, once authenticated, your unique Tax ID appears on screen. Save the digital certificate securely. This number is your protection against the ₦100,000 baseline noncompliance penalty.
**Generating and Activating a Tax ID for Businesses**
Under the integrated digital framework, business TIN generation occurs automatically. When you incorporate your company through the Corporate Affairs Commission, the system assigns a Tax ID to the newly formed entity without requiring a separate application.
