Nigerian tax expert Taiwo Oyedele has stated that the challenge of tax non-compliance in the country is less about an unwillingness to pay and more about a widespread lack of understanding among citizens regarding their tax obligations.
According to Oyedele, many Nigerians are not deliberately evading taxes but are simply unaware of what they owe, how to remit payments, and the benefits that taxation brings to public infrastructure and services.
The remarks point to a need for sustained taxpayer education and enlightenment campaigns by revenue authorities at all levels of government. Without closing the knowledge gap, efforts to widen the tax net and boost domestic revenue mobilisation may continue to fall short of targets.
